I finished the book with a smile on my face—what a lovely read!

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into this, but I was excited because the premise seemed like a heartwarming, healing story that I’d enjoy. Initially, I did have some concerns. I worried it might end up feeling repetitive—something I wouldn’t have minded if it were my first time reading a healing fiction, but since I’ve read quite a few, I was hoping for something a bit different. Fortunately, this book did offer something different!

At the Chibineko Kitchen, a quaint restaurant by the beach, customers grieving the loss of loved ones can order kagezen—a mysterious meal that allows them to communicate with the spirits of their deceased family members. While the owners seem a little doubtful about the idea, the question lingers: Could it actually be true? Kotoko, encouraged by a recommendation from someone close to her late brother, visits the restaurant early in the morning, as it only serves breakfast. Oh, and just a heads-up—there’s a cat in the kitchen! :’)

While the blurb centers on Kotoko and her late brother, the narrative unfolds in a more intricate way, intertwining several other stories. It doesn't follow the typical format of simply introducing different visitors to the restaurant in a chronological order. Instead, certain characters are revisited—Kotoko, in particular—delving deeper into their pasts and resolving lingering uncertainties. I really appreciated this approach, as it added depth to the story, and the exploration of the restaurant's own mysterious background was both whimsical and engaging.

Overall, it’s a wonderfully calming read—ideal for when you’re looking to unwind. Initially, it feels reminiscent of Before The Coffee Gets Cold, but as the story progresses, it reveals its own unique charm, and I found myself enjoying this one even more!
